Did you notice people in the hallways recently who didn’t exactly resemble teachers or students? Many of them were in your classes asking you what activity you may be working on. The visitors were here on a “High Schools That Work Technical Assistance visit,” from October 25th to October 27th.

Today, October 27th, the visiting team talked with the KCHS administration, SGA, and the Principal's Advisory group. The High Schools That Work team said KCHS was doing a really good job and commended the staff and students but said there is always room for improvement and they had some ways they could help.

One of the “Outstanding Practices”acknowledged was the increase of students scoring a 3 or better on AP exams. That’s a 27% increase from, 43% to 65%. The HSTW team was also pleased with the 7-year school improvement plan with the specific strategies and timelines.

Some suggestions for improvement are to expand the ninth grade academy concept beyond teaming up with Echo Hill and to increase parent involvement. They also presented possible action steps for their four challenges, which are for KCHS to continue to raise expectations for student achievement and to actively engage all students in meeting higher standards.

Challenge two is to continue the implementation of guidance and advisement, champions for children, and community and parental involvement.

The third challenge for KCHS is to increase access and integration of technology into classroom instruction. Their last challenge is to improve transition from middle school to high school, high school to post secondary education and careers.

The meeting concluded with a “What’s next” segment which tells how the technical assistance visit wants KCHS to continue to improve student achievement for all students.

The High Schools That Work team also thanked the staff and students for KCHS’s hospitality, cooperation, and helpfulness during their visit.
