French fries are no longer offered in any of the school’s cafeterias.

The greasy goods for $1.35 were eliminated as a result of construction issues as the school adds new square footage.

During construction this fall, builders demolished the O-House cafeteria that housed the fryers and the required vents for making French fries. Administrators moved the student eating areas to classrooms and hallways in B House and to the former B House cafeteria, which is not big enough for fryers.

With smaller lunch rooms and kitchen areas, some cuts had to be made, said Martha Ritchie, food service and purchasing manager for Southfield Public Schools.

“The fact that they don’t have fries is okay because it makes lunch a little healthier,” said senior Kristine Ali.

But junior Evan Cunningham wants his fries: “The fries need to come back,” Cunningham says. “I used to eat pizza and fries. Now I’m limited to just pizza and less variety.”

According to Ritchie, students can instead order new hot sandwiches and hot pockets or the familiar salads and sub sandwiches.
