Sophomore journeys to Japan for summer trip

Fifteen-year-old Matthew Anderson anxiously awaits his first time away from his parents in a new world.

On June 25 the sophomore plans to jet to Japan for a foreign exchange program called The Michigan-Shiga Exchange. The program costs $2,550 and lasts two weeks.

In January at a board meeting, he was announced as one of the 19 people chosen from the State of Michigan to go to Japan.

“I’ve always wanted to go to Japan since I was a kid, and it’s finally happening,” Anderson said.

School counselor Patricia Yorke helped Anderson get into the foreign exchange program by recommending him. “I am very excited for him to have this opportunity to go to Japan; I think it will be life-changing for him,” Yorke said.

Anderson was not the only student at Southfield High School to apply for the program. Yorke said, “There were about two or three other students I did recommendations for.”

Anderson will live with his chosen host family and their child. Anderson said he looks forward to meeting his new host family and is very interested in learning more about a new culture.
