“Once Upon a Prom: Dream” by Jeanine Le Ny is the perfect book to get people in the prom spirit. The book is published by Scholastic Inc. and is at the reasonable price of $5.99, though it is available at the Southfield High School library. All the fun, excitiment and drama that comes with the prom season is captured in the 218 pages of the first installment of the “Once Upon a Prom” series.

Possibly the most exciting time in a teenage girl’s life would have to be her senior prom night. Getting a dress, finding a date, spending time with friends at the last high school dance - it’s all in Once Upon a Prom. This is exactly what best friends Jordan Taylor, Nisha Khubani, and Tara Macmillion are going through in this book.

Jordan is the typical it-girl of the school. She’s the head of the cheerleading squad, she’s dating the captain of the football team, and she is the obvious choice for prom queen.

Nisha comes from an Indian background but has taken on the American lifestyle. She has a blond-haired, blue-eyed boyfriend whom she has been dating for almost six months and couldn’t be happier with.

Tara is the head of the prom committee, and although she doesn’t have the fabulous relationships of her friends, she does have a secret admirer whom she hopes to take as her date to the biggest night of her life.

Every chapter uncovers a new drama that each of the girls has to face. This is exactly what makes the book a fast, fun read.

Interestingly, the story is told from alternating points of view. Each chapter is told from the perspective of one of three girls, and the top of each chapter is a countdown to prom, starting at “4 weeks, 6 days, 2 hours, and 27 minutes till prom…” in chapter one.

The end of the book leaves readers craving for the second installment of the series to see how events turn out.

“Once Upon a Prom” is modern fiction, with young girls galavanting through Nordstrom in search of the perfect prom dress and texting each other. At first, the book seems like a sugary sweet, fun story where pretty girls have everything they want and more, but as the tale unfolds, the story becomes more realistic, making it a perfect prom season read.
