On Friday, March 9, the varsity girls lost 50-29 to the Brillion Lions, ranked third in the state. Brillion's record of 22-1 might have been intimidating, but eighth-seeded Southern Door played good defense to keep the score manageable for a come-back.
After scoring early and often against Valders in the first round playoffs, the Lady Eagles did the complete opposite; scoring few points with only 12 in the first half. While only scoring a few points in the first half, they did manage to hold the dominating Lions to only 26 points; however, Brillion managed to score 27 of their points inside, with 5'10" foward Courtney C. and 6'0" forward Kylie M. leading the Lions' offense. Courtney C. scored 14 to lead all players. Not much went right for the Eagles, with poor luck shooting and turnovers hampering the Eagle offense.
In Coach Wautier's first coaching season, his team finished with a 12-12 record. After a hot start, the Eagles went on a long losing streak but finished the season strong. Unfortunately for the girls, the team is losing seniors McKayla D., Amy E., Ahna K., Brianna S., and Keri R; however the starting trio of Cora B., Chey M., and Rachel A. return as seniors to bring leadership next year.
While the Eagles scored only 12 points in the first half, they matched that score in the third quarter. Unfortunately, Brillion outscored the Eagles in every quarter. Both teams committed few errors, with a total of only 12 fouls. With SD only scoring 29 points, no Eagle scored double digit points. Chey M. led SD with eight points; other Eagle scorers include Rachel A. and Amy E., six points; McKayla D., four points; Bailey B., three points; and Cora B., two points.
The season over, the Eagles will be looking forward to next year. Both Coach Wautier and the returning players gained valuable experience. A deep-run into the playoffs next year would not surprise many because of the talent the Eagles possess.
