At-a-glance

Walking past the Auxiliary Gym during fifth period on a Friday, one will see an array of colors flying through the air. Girls deftly toss purple and green flags behind their backs, all the while counting as a singular unit. Each girl smiles and laughs as the group pulls off a flawless routine.
The color guard performs flag, rifle, and dance routines with the band. They practice every school day for both football halftime shows and band competitions. Sophomore Caitlyn Moss, as well as other members, put in intense work to perfect the routines.
"We’re a mixture of performing [and] dance. It requires a lot of arm strength. Sometimes it does hurt," Moss said.
This year, the color guard has expanded in multiple ways, including adding new members and new aspects to their shows. The veteran members now perform a rifle routine, and, as sophomore Katie Likar explained, the competition outfits have changed as well.
"Our red, blue, and white outfits stayed the same. For competition every year, we change our outfits. It goes with the theme -- Beethoven," Katie said.
The members believe the addition of rifles has added both depth and interest to the shows that they could not achieve with just flags.
"It made our show more spectacular," Moss said.
These new additions have aided the color guard in their competitions this year. They performed at Norton, Claymont, and Revere, and they received a score of a one, the best a team can receive, in two of their three shows.
"We get judged on looking up and forward and presenting ourselves," Katie said.
For senior captain Sara Likar, the changes have made this year different from previous years. The new aspects have added difficulty to both practices and routines.
"Everything is a little bit harder," Sara said.
To join, students sign up for band in their schedules. The members add extra practices outside of class to further review for shows.
"Sometimes [we practice] after school. On Saturdays before competitions we practice football work and the competition show," Moss said.
Color guard expects more members during the winter, when they perform in gyms.
"[The team] gets bigger during winter guard," Katie said.
Through color guard, the members gain both new skills and friends. The group is still growing, but they hope to continue adding members.
"I think we’re getting a little more recognition," Moss said.
